Da Nang in December has weather as a real risk — northeast monsoon residuals can mean cool (18–25°C), overcast days, especially early December. Scooter potential is excellent (Son Tra, Hai Van Pass, Marble Mountains, Hoi An all within range). Best used as a 2–3 day stop paired with Hoi An 30km south.

• Hai Van Pass ride — start 7am; 20km switchbacks, ocean both sides; summit café stop
• Son Tra Peninsula circuit — forested hillside, macaques, Linh Ung Pagoda views, My Khe descent
• Mi Quang at Bà Mua (Hai Phong St) — Da Nang's defining dish, half-dry noodle style
• Marble Mountains (Thuy Son) — 6am before tour groups; caves and pagodas inside the peak

Outstanding December weather (dry, 25–30°C) but exploration potential maxes out in 2 days. Heavy Russian expat influence has diluted the food scene. No NYE atmosphere to speak of. Best as a short detour from HCMC, not a main base.

• Kitesurfing lesson at Surfpoint Vietnam — Mui Ne is world-class kite territory in December
• Fishing village dawn — 5am harbour, boats returning, fish auction, local breakfast stalls
• Red Sand Dunes at sunset — classic; arrive 4pm for the colours

Good value hillside villas with sea views at 20–30% less than Choeng Mon equivalents. Southern scooter roads (Tarnim Magic Garden, Na Muang, Grandfather Rock, Thong Krut) are excellent. December caveat: southeast-facing coast takes more of the northeast monsoon — some rough surf days likely.

• Tarnim Magic Garden (Secret Buddha Garden) — 45-min scooter climb, bizarre carved jungle figures; almost no tourists
• Na Muang Waterfalls #1 + #2 — #2 requires 30-min hike, worth it; 3hr combined circuit
• Ko Taen longtail from Thong Krut pier — quiet snorkel reef, very few visitors
• Grandfather + Grandmother Rock (Hin Ta / Hin Yai) — go before 9am
• Inland cut-through: Lamai → Na Muang → Bang Por — rubber plantations, Burmese temple, west coast arrival

Island's most overlooked zone — virtually zero foreign tourists, local life, and the west coast road south from Nathon is genuinely one of the best rides on Samui. Hilltop villas have northwest sunset views. Thin food scene (25–30 min scooter to any quality restaurant) limits it as a sole base. Best as a final-week contrast after Choeng Mon.

• West coast road south — Nathon → Thong Yang → Taling Ngam → inland cut; most traffic-free riding on the island
• Nathon pier at sunset — completely tourist-free; 7-Eleven beer and a proper Thai sunset
• Nathon town market — Thai residents' commercial centre; wet market, local prices, no menus in English
